This week I got to play with a piece of podcasting technology I have been dying to try out since I first spotted it August of last year, the Tascam MiniStudio US-42 and US-32. Eric Larsen, Director of marketing for Tascam and TEAC, was on hand at Podfest Multimedia Expo, to display these really simple and easy to use audio recording interfaces that will help you start producing your podcast in no time. And I had to sit down to try it out and share it with you.
This device (US-42) comes pre-loaded with nearly everything you would need to get started podcasting.
Central to the MiNiSTUDIO Creator are a pair of XLR/combo connectors and dual HDDA mic preamps. These studio-quality mic pres, coupled with built-in phantom power allow you to quickly and easily connect your favorite dynamic or conderser microphones and get the conversation started. Under the hood, the MiNiSTUDIO Creator also features dual 4-band parametric EQ, adjustable on-board compression and a digital reverb effect with a convenient front panel depth control. And just in case you’d like to add a bit of music to the mix the MiNiSTUDIO Creator features two Hi-z 1/4″ inputs ready to accept an electric guitar or bass.
It’s little cousin the US-32 has just one mic input but still packs quite the punch in terms of if its features.
Both also have three assignable hotkeys so you can easily add sound effects to your show while recording. Both devices also include sound effects that quickly change your voice in a number of amusing ways. And while both can be operated in their easy mode, you have access to the expert mode that provides a comprehensive set of controls to fine-tune EQ, compression, and reverb.
This box creates the mix/minus so podcasters can plug in their mic, start talking to someone on Skype and can also play those sound effects back to their guest. It’s a one-stop recording device.
In fact, while we were recording it on the floor of Podfest Multimedia Expo, conference attendee Hilda walked by and said, “It looks less intimidating than other equipment I’ve seen.” That’s the name of game, simplicity.
Also, stay tuned for a more in-depth look at the incredible Podfest Multimedia Expo and The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary. I highly encourage everyone to attend this conference next year and watch this movie when it hits iTunes in just a few weeks.
